Long Melford U9’s Blues
0 Feering Falcons U9’s Blues 1 (Sun 14 February 2010)
Melford entertained top of the
table Feering in what promised to be a close game.
The two sides had already met twice this season, an away match in the league and
a cup fixture. Feering had one both games but they
were very even contests and Melford were unlucky
not to get anything from either game, with Feering
scoring late winners in both games. Would Melford
have the luck they deserved?
At the beginning of the first half it seemed that they
might. In the first minute Joe Skillicorn got a
head to a Bryn Gartland cross from the right but
couldn’t manage to hit the target. In the sixth minute Kyle Hurley had a shot
saved after a George Ince-Slater cross was cleared.
For most of the rest of the half the visitors has the better chances and Melford were kept in the match with some fine saves from
Jack Sandford in the Melford goal and defensive play from Kyle Hurley,
Harrison Nunn and Jamie Sau-Waghorn. Melford did finish the second half strongly and for the
final three minutes or so of the half, Melford were
camped in the Falcon’s half with shots from Joe Skillicorn, Niall Foley and Bryn Garford saved or wide.
The second half proved a much tighter affair with fewer
goal scoring chances that the first. Melford didn’t
look like scoring and Jack Sandford was again
called upon to pull off a save to keep Melford in
the game. It seemed the game was heading for a goalless draw when, three minutes
from time Feering won a corner which they converted
to take the lead. Melford did fight back but were
unable to force the equaliser. Melford were not
outclassed by any means, and were unlucky to lose out again in the closing
minutes of the game after a sterling defensive performance.
