Ryan Owens reports on his side's 2-1 win at Woodbridge in the Reserves Cup on Saturday 6 October
After last week's defeat against Walsham (of which I'm still dumb founded how we didn't win the game after creating so many chances) nothing more than a win was required if we still had hopes of qualifying for the next round of the competition.
As in recent games we set up with the plan to be nice and compact as in our previous game against Woodbridge we knew what a good footballing side they could be. The game was being played at a good pace on a surface that suited both teams who were trying to play football the way it should be, on the deck, passing and moving!
Chances however were few and far between due to good defending from both teams, this however didn't detract from the game being a good spectacle to watch. The deadlock was broken when a good flowing move from the Melford midfielders released LUKE SIMPSON on the wing who skipped past the fullback before unleashing a shot into the roof of the net to make it 1-0 Melford. Another chance was created by captain Dan Bull for Karl Delves but unfortunately the young stiker wasn't able to take advantage of the great pass that found him.
The lads were certainly upbeat at half time and raring to go for the second half. As is always when playing with confidence, the Melford team were passing the ball round with consumate ease and repelling the threats of the sporadic Woodbridge attacks. The back four were superb all day but at the heart Dack and Barr were outstanding.
The second and decisive goal was scored by KARL DELVES. He ran his socks off all day doing the ugly jobs that most strikers hate doing. He won so many free kicks and made average passes good ones with his tireless running. So much so that a good through ball was dispatched after his initial effort was saved by the Woodbridge keeper to put us 2-0 up and in complete control.
The only sour note was in the final minute a long cross was met by the Woodbridge striker who headed home a consolation goal that robbed the Melford defence and goalkeeper the clean sheet they richly deserved.
Everybody played really well, as mentioned Barr and Delves especially which is great news as they are still playing Under 18s football but already giving good performances for the reserves. The big game is Saturday against Walsham again in the county cup, let's hope we put in a similar performance and if we do then I'm sure we'll be through to the next round.
