Ryan Owens reports on his side's 0-1 defeat against Cockfield United in the Cockfield Cup final on Saturday 4 August
On a very warm afternoon the squad was tested to its limits as we, like the first team, were struggling to get 13 players for the match due to injuries and holidays.
However this didn't stop us from fielding a side that was competitive and full of ability. The game as you can imagine due to the heat was hard but the football played by the boys was excellent. The passing had improved and the possession of the ball was far superior than the opposition's. We created several good chances which we failed to take, either good saves from their keeper or our failure to find the net.
As is the norm for games where you dominate and don't take your opportunities, we were punished by Cockfield's only shot of the afternoon, a cross from the right knocked home by the incoming forward. Again the lads rallied with shots galore on the Cockfield goal but alas it was just one of those days.
This was a good workout for the squad in what was hard testing conditions, we played some good football and created chances which is always good, The big lesson learnt though is that if you don't punish teams when you have the chance you're always likely to that sucker punch. Rather that happen now though than against Clacton on the 25th.
We have another friendly, a local derby between us and Sudbury Athletic on Wednesday evening (8th August) at Stoneylands kick off 7pm, hope to see some of you there.
Team v Cockfield : John Griggs, Ross Swain, Mark Dack, Mark Arnold, Craig Green, Luke Simpson, Danny Bull, Carl Cook, Kirk Hardy, Ben Woodfield, Stuart Alston, Gave Leeks, Tom Perry
