Home v Stanway Villa Blues, Lost 2-3 (Sun 28 Oct)
The Reds played like their counterparts (the Blues) and started very well playing the far more attractive football. Captain Callum Hemson showing some good skills & composure in the midfield with some impressive attacking football from Billy Miller ably supported by Sebastian Hawkins and Joe Gibson in attack.
Melford eventually took the lead after Stanway failed to clear a corner with Christian Readings finishing from close range; unfortunately Melford’s joy was short lived as Stanway hit Melford on the break with a well-worked goal. In the second half the game continued in the same way with Melford controlling the ball. The Stanway keeper produced a number of fine saves to deny Ben Kemsley and Sebastian Hawkins before Joel Brinkley gave Melford the lead again with a well taken right foot drive into the roof of the net.
Stanway started to put Melford under increasing pressure; defenders Joel Brinkley, Ben Haughton and Samuel Kerruish were outstanding while keeper Ben Coleman produced a number of fine saves to keep the visitors at bay.
The pressure began to show and Stanway equalized from a resulting free kick that Melford failed to clear. The game then went from end to end with a draw looking a fair result; unfortunately in the dying seconds of the game a great individual goal by the Stanway forward snatched the points for the visitors. Away v Great Bradford Reds, Drew 1-1 (Sun 07 Oct)
Melford started stronger and played fast flowing football, attacking at every opportunity causing Bradford’s to defend as Melford pushed for that vital first goal, it eventually came courtesy of Ben Kemsley powerful run and excellent finish. The Melford midfield trio of Callum Hemson, Christian Readings and Ben Haughton started to exert controlled pressure with a number of good attacking runs from all three, whilst Joe Gibson and Sebastian Hawkins were causing the Bradford’s defenders problems with there endless running. Unfortunately for Melford they were unable to convert their chances into goals. Bradford’s rallied in the second half putting Melford under increasing pressure, defenders Joel Brinkley, Harrison Fernandez and Samuel Kerruish were outstanding but Bradford’s eventually equalised after Melford failed to clear a corner. The game went from end to end with Joel Brinkley and Joe Gibson forcing the Bradford’s keeper into action, whilst Sebastian Hawkins narrowly pulled his shot wide of the target. Bradford’s still looked capable of snatching a goal and Ben Coleman produced two tremendous saves to earn his team a deserved draw.
Home v Colchester Athletic Reds, Lost 1-3 (Sun 23 Sep)
In a very tight match with some good football being played both teams started strongly, Long Melford soon stepped up the pace and had a foray down the right wing resulting in Ben Kemsley putting Melford in the lead after outpacing the Athletic defence. Melford played some good football with some great running from Joe Gibson, Sebastian Hawkins and Billy Miller. Callum Hemson played with his usual vision and thought and again did himself proud. Unfortunately Melford let their concentration drop and despite some outstanding goal keeping by Ben Coleman, Athletic equalised just before half time.
In the second half Melford again made the greater of the ball and created some good chances and pressure but were unable to convert any off their chances. The game went from end to end with defenders Joel Brinkley, Sam Kurriuish and Harrison Fernandez making some crucial interceptions. Rolling substitutions were made as and when the players got tired and the players, Christian Readings and Ben Haughton done themselves and team proud. Unfortunately with Melford driving forward from the midfield in search of the all-important goal, they were hit on the counter attack twice.
Away v Lexden Saints U10's Reds, Won 4-3 (Sun 16 Sep)
Melford started slowly and found themselves defending and conceding a goal in the opening five minutes. As the half progressed Melford started to see more of the ball and soon equalised with a well-taken goal by Ben Kemsley. With their confidence boosted Melford took control of the game and were soon creating numerous chances, Callum Hemson controlled midfield allowing Christian Readings and Joe Gibson to push forward. A great individual goal by Sebastian Hawkins and a deflected cross following a great run by Billy Miller gave Melford a 3-1 lead at half time.
Lexden rallied in the second half putting Melford under increasing pressure, defenders Joel Brinkley and Samuel Kerruish were outstanding but unfortunately they could not prevent Lexden from levelling the game at 3-3. This set up a nerve raking finish, with Ben Coleman keeping his team in the game with some outstanding saves. Melford threatened to score every time they went forward with Ben Kemsley, Sebastian Hawkins and Joe Gibson forcing the Lexden keeper into action, whilst Billy Miller and Callum Hemson narrowly pulled their shots wide of the target. Eventually Melford’s persistence paid off as Ben Kemsley outpaced the Lexden defence and calmly slotted the ball under the advancing keeper.
Away v Stanway Rovers U10's Reds, Lost 1-5 (Sun 09 Sep)
From the outset Melford played fast flowing football causing Stanway to defend as Melford pushed for that vital first goal, Callum Hemson, Harrison Fernandez and Ben Kemsley controlled midfield with defenders Joel Brinkley and Samuel Kerruish pressurising the Stanway forwards. Melford took the lead after a Stanway defender handled a cross from Joe Gibson, Hemson converting the penalty. The goal sparked Stanway into life and they scored two goals before the break, the second after Ben Coleman produced a tremendous save only to have the ball kicked out of his hands and into the net.
Melford found themselves defending for much of the second half with Christian Readings replacing the injured Coleman in goal. Melford still produced some great football and excellent midfield play by Callum Hemson and Sebastian Hawkins resulted in the Stanway keeper producing two great saves to deny Ben Kemsley and Joel Brinkley a deserved goal.
