ADAM FLACK: On the scoresheet for Melford today
1 - 1
Ridgeons
League Division One, Saturday 06 March 2010
Forget the fact that both teams are in the lower half of the
table this was an entertaining game, with plenty of goalmouth incident
and
honest endeavour from both teams.
Kicking up the slope it was the home
team
showing the early power, first Melford keeper Wood dived full length to
save a
header from Moore, and soon after he was again in action to save
from O .Brown. Melford retaliated with Flack putting a rasping drive
just over the Whitton crossbar.
Ten minutes before half time Melford
almost
went ahead, in quick succession Crissell and then Skeggs had efforts
cleared off the goal line. This excitement continued when a corner from
King found Cawtheray and his effort was blocked on the line with Melford
vehemently claiming that the ball had been handled by a defender, but
the
refree waved away the penalty claim.
It was the visitors who were
enjoying more
of the play, and again Flack got behind the Whitton defence, keeper
Barry ran
off his line out of the box and clattered into the Melford striker. It
was an
anxious moment or two for the young keeper, who was yellow carded for
the
offence which in some matches could well have been a red card.
But it
was the
home team who crowned the first half when on 42 minutes FROUD nipped in
between
two uncertain Melford defenders to slot the ball past Wood the
Melford custodian.
It was a frenetic start to the second half with
Melford straight on the attack some neat passing between Flack and
Grindrod, which
saw the final ball flash along the Whitton box with King just unable to
make
contact at the far post. The home team replied straight away with Clarke
firing
in a fierce drive which keeper Wood magnificently tipped over the bar, a
save that would have graced any League.
On seventy two minutes debut
making Reardon replaced veteran French for Melford, and within one
minute, the
newcomer made his presence count. Passing well to young wide player
King, the Melford substitute found space in the Whitton box and was
about to shoot when he was clumsily challenged, and subsequently
tumbled to
the ground with the referee immediately pointing to the penalty spot.
Up stepped
Melford leading scorer FLACK to plant the ball into the net and put
the Villagers level.
Within the space of minutes Melford could have
taken all
the points Grindrod lobbed keeper Barry but just cleared the bar, a
mercurial run
by Statham took him into the box but his shot was blocked and in added
time a
left wing cross from Grindrod just evaded Flack at the far post. From a
Melford
perspective what a difference a week makes!
