Two very poor teams, contrived to entertain the sparse
crowd with an exhibition of football, sadly it was of a very low
standard with little passion or excitement. For the record Ipswich
won, and deserved the victory on the basis that
they produced a little more effort against the tepid qualities of the
home
team.
It was almost annoying for the home supporters when in the first
five
minutes Melford had two good chances, players free in the box who
seemed
to favour passing rather than shooting in the direction of the goal and
visiting keeper Hammond.
At times the passing from both teams
bordered on
the farcical, with simple ten yard passes seemingly beyond the skill
range of both sets of players. Nearest first half chances for Melford
were a diving header from Skeggs followed by a shot over the bar from
Earl. Whilst
at the other end Butcher was halted by timely tackles from Durell and
Grindrod
did well to clear a free kick from Welham.
A more determined Ipswich
took the lead after sixty minutes, when a free
kick from Le Page was not cleared by the Melford defence, and in accord
with the general standard of the game, BUTCHER bundled the ball
home from close range.
The final ball for Melford was totally wasted,
and Ipswich had more of the second half play with the speed
and movement of Butcher and Fike causing Melford problems. The
final whistle came as a welcome relief for the spectators with Ipswich
climbing
three points above Melford, in the League, and the home team without a
doubt if
relegation were an issue would be cast iron candidates for a drop
back into the Essex and Suffolk Border League.
