MATCH REPORT FROM RESERVES' DRAW AT HAVERHILL LAST NIGHT (April 26, 2008)
Haverhill Rovers Res. 2 Long Melford Res. 2
(Ridgeons Reserve Teams Division South, Fri 25 Apr)
Despite the home team missing key players , as were the visitors, the home team established a firm grip on the game during the first half.
Within minutes Haverhill should have gone ahead when Halls shot wide from close range and Lillie put his header wide of the gaping net. A corner at the other end saw Clark miss his kick when well placed.
On sixteen minutes Haverhill took the lead , full back Hammond was allowed to run from his own half to the edge of the box unchallenged by the Melford defence, his ball into the box bounced nicely for COWLING to head into the net.
However Melford levelled on 29 minutes a thirty yard free kick taken by CLARK deceived keeper Edwards and he could only touch the ball into his own net.
Putting the poor first half behind them Melford started brightly in the second half, with more movement off the ball and some tighter marking on the home team.
After Brightwell had put his shot wide on 61 minutes Melford took the lead, the ball came to Alston on the halfway line,he neatly drew his defender and put in a perfect pass for HARDY to run onto and he slotted through the legs of keeper Edwards to put Melford ahead .
Melford gained in confidence, with Clark and French working hard to keep Melford on the ascendency. After a harsh free kick on 78 minutes Haverhill levelled the kick, floated into the box by Frazier, found the unmarked COWLING who headed home.
In the remaining time Melford lived dangerously with Haverhill hitting the bar and post, and Brightwell being unlucky with a booking when clearly from the grandstand position it was Frazier who had kicked the Melford defender and not the other way round.
So last game for the Reserves who hopefully will all regroup in June for the new season.
