1ST TEAM MAKE SUFFOLK SENIOR CUP EXIT AS HADLEIGH GO THROUGH (January 06, 2008)
Long Melford 0 Hadleigh United 2
(Touchline Sports Suffolk Senior Cup Quarter Final, Sat 5 Jan 2008)

The form book was maintained in this local derby and Hadligh ran out worthy winners against a plucky Melford team. The Brettsiders bossed the first half and  Melford were under considerable pressure for periods of play, some poor finishing and brave keeping  keeping the Melford goal in tact.

After early shooting misses by Rose and Payne, another good chance saw Fleming heading wide. The break came on 32 minutes, despite Melford protests, the referee awarded Hadleigh a free kick after a sliding tackle from Skeggs, this was whipped into the Melford box, after some frenetic attempts to clear, the  ball was bundled into the net off the shoulder of ROSE,with Melford claiming the ball had been handled by a Hadleigh player..

With a bit of luck Melford could have levelled straight away.  Daw  found took on defenders down the left flank, cut in and cracked in a great shot, with keeper Whitwell beaten the ball bounced off the post and ran along the goalmouth to be cleared by a defender. This  was a crucial point of the game and could have meant a closer game if the  Melford youngster had netted, this was followed by an effort from French which just cleared the bar.

Just on the half time whistle Hadleigh struck again. A needless corner was conceded by Melford, and from this the ball rebounded  around the Melford box without being cleared, the ball coming to PAYNE and his scuffed shot found the Melford net,a good time to score and bad time to concede.

Straight from the resumption Melford seemed to have a revived flair to their football, with Skeggs getting in on goal but putting his shot wide. Play soon swung to the other end with a Myhill shot producing a good save from Croll.

Hadleigh continued to attack with Kingston firing high and wide, and Croll saving a shot from Payne at the second attempt. The  Hadleigh goal just survived a free kick from Grindrod which was inches over the bar, then came another miss at the other end for Hadleigh.  A great run by Myhill took him into the Melford box eventually with the goal at his mercy but his poorly directed shot went wide of the Melford goal.

Chances fell at both ends, but the whistle came and in the end Hadleigh went through with a deserved victory and scoreline.
