REPEAT OF LAST SEASON'S MATCH AS LATE GOAL SINKS 1ST TEAM AT SAFFRON WALDEN TOWN (January 02, 2008)
Saffron Walden Town

It was a case of history repeating itself at Catons Lane tonight as our 1st Team went down to a late goal losing 1-0 at Saffron Walden Town, just as they did last season.

Saffron Walden Town 1 Long Melford 0
Ridgeons League First Division, Wednesday 2nd January 2008

In the terms of a Boxing Match, overall the  scoring would have been about 6 rounds to 4 in favour of the home team, this was  particularly evident in the first half  which was all about great keeping from Floyd Croll and some resolute defending from the Melford back four.

Early on Croll brought off two fantastic saves from Ben Riches and Butchart, with Melford  breaking up the attacks mainly on the edge of the penalty area.  Then in another attack  Godden well positioned at the back post from a corner put his header wide.of the post. Without much success Skeggs tried hard to get the Melford attack working, but the home midfield snuffed out much of the effort.

It was a promising start to the second half  for Melford with Daw outpacing the home defence but firing wide from the angle,in another Melford attack Skeggs did likewise.  Whilst Croll  at the other end continued in fine fashion aving two blistering efforts from substitute Bell.

On a cold evening the busiest man on the field was the referee who in a very gentile game seemed hell bent on dishing out yellow cards, ending his tally at six, with Melford the recipients of  five, with hardly a tackle of vicious intent during the whole game..

The Villagers were now starting to find some pace and rhythmn, and  soon Tony French had the ball in the Walden net but was ruled offside. At the other end the killer blow was to arrive on 85 minutes,a silly free kick was conceded. Bell floated the ball into the Melford box and CHADWICK rose high to head home.

Perhaps after the courage shown by Melford they could have expected to have at least gained a point, but is was not to be.
