FIRST TEAM NARROWLY BEATEN AT TIPTREE DESPITE GOOD PERFORMANCE (November 10, 2007)
Tiptree United beat our 1st Team 2-0 earlier today at Chapel Road in front of a crowd of 62. Second half goals from Ian Nimmo and Luke Webster sealed the points for the home side.

Melford made a bright start and after 3 minutes Danny Brind closed down home keeper Smith who sliced his kick out for a corner when on another day it could have been much more costly. On 9 minutes, Brind played a fine reverse ball to Ashley Skeggs who made good connection with his shot but it flashed inches wide.

Tiptree were always a threat with their pace and movement, Tommy English, Tom Noble and Gary Hill missed several good chances in the first half and when the home attack did find the target Melford keeper Floyd Croll was in excellent form.

Perhaps the best chance for the home side came on 24 minutes, when Hill found himself with the goal at his mercy from close range but Croll made a fantastic save. Croll saved Melford again on 37 minutes when Noble tried his luck.

On 42 minutes Dan Grindrod, who was outstanding at left-back on his return from injury, hit a free-kick into the box and Liam Cawtheray got up well but glanced his header wide.

The second half again saw a fairly even opening 15 minutes or so, until the deadlock was broken in the 59th minute - Ian Nimmo hit a sweetly struck left foot shot that dipped into the top corner.

Melford responded immediately by introducing Carl Daw into the action, but far all their hard work and application genuine chances were very thin on the ground for Melford in the second half.

Tiptree looked dangerous in spells, with Croll making a good save from Webster and Hill firing wide. The crucial second goal came in the 73rd minute, Croll made a brilliant save  but the ball broke to Webster who finished clinically.

Melford worked hard for the rest of the match to ensure no further goals were conceded and that the scoreline did not become too much of an injustice.

In all fairness Melford created very little in the second half , but will be encouraged by the opportunities they had in the first period. Defensively Melford were very sound all afternoon, defending as a team and showing admirable effort and commitment throughout.

MELFORD: Floyd Croll, Neil Hayward, Dan Grindrod, Danny Brind, Matt Wilson, Steve Adams, Liam Cawtheray, Paul Walker, David Kenyon, Tony French, Ashley Skeggs Subs: Carl Daw (for Kenyon), Scott Barr (for Grindrod), Luke Simpson (for Hayward)
  • The Reserves lost 3-0 at Harwich & Parkeston Reserves in the league, more details of that defeat to follow shortly.
