GROUP 4 DEFEAT LEAVES RESERVES WITH MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB (September 29, 2007)
Long Melford Reserves' hopes of qualifying from Group 4 of the Reserves Cup were left hanging by a thread after Walsham-le-Willows won 1-0 at Stoneylands today. In a scrappy and at times bad tempered contest, Melford enjoyed more possession but unfortunately the chances they created were not taken.
The first half saw opportunities for both sides, Sam Mansfield made an excellent save on 28 minutes after a Walsham forward burst through on goal, but Melford created several corners and from one of these Dan Bull headed inches wide on 39 minutes. The defining moment of the match came in the 42nd minute - as Walsham took the lead via an unopposed header from a corner.
The second half saw Melford well on top, with home keeper Sam Mansfield hardly tested for the entire 45 minutes. Melford dominated without really turning their possession into clear cut chances, although Bull had a header saved and Ryan Owens scored a goal ruled out for offside.
Perhaps a draw would have been the fairer result as the Melford defence never looked troubled by Walsham in the second half and it always looked like the home side would eventually force the equaliser. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be and it leaves the Reserves with a mountain to climb if they are to qualify from this group, especially as they only have one more home match to be played.
