DISAPPOINTING START AS FIRST TEAM SLIP UP AGAINST GRUNDISBURGH (July 21, 2007)

The First Team lost 2-0 at Stoneylands this afternoon against SIL champions Grundisburgh in their first pre-season fixture. Kicking off in bright sunshine at the earlier than usual time of 2pm, it was an ultimately fruitless afternoon despite plenty of chances for the home side.
Grundisburgh looked a decent side but Melford created more chances, and apart from some sloppy defending inside the first twenty five minutes - which allowed Grundisburgh to race into a 2-0 lead - the only difference was Melford's inability to take their chances.
The second half was a big improvement on a pretty disappointing first half performance by Melford, with Carl Daw hitting the bar and Steve Chisholm heading over from close range as they took control of the match and enjoyed plenty of possession.
Melford handed debuts to Liam Bevis in central midfield and David Kenyon and Matt Wilson up front. Steve Arnold played the first half on his return, as did Andy Gooderham at right back.
It is obviously disappointing to lose any match, but it is very early days and it must be remembered that Grundisburgh are a very decent side with players of the calibre of Glen Driver in their side. There was plenty of hard work from Melford - the players' fitness looked good and if the chances had been taken it would have been a different story altogether.
Melford (4-4-2) Craig Rulton, Andy Gooderham, Tony French, Steve Arnold, Ez Durell; Danny Brind, Paul Walker, Liam Bevis, Dan Grindrod ; David Kenyon, Matthew Wilson ; Substitutes : Carl Daw, Liam Cawtheray, Steve Adams, Steve Chisholm
Tuesday night will see the First Team host Ridgeons League Premier Division side Needham Market, a match that should see the return of former Melford favourite Andy Jones.
The Reserves drew 1-1 against their Grundisburgh counterparts, that match kicked off at 4pm - more information on that match should be on the website tomorrow.
